SAILABILITY ANTIGUA APPLAUDS INCLUSIVITY IN WORLD SAILING
Tuesday 21st May 2019

World Sailing, the world governing body of sailing, has partnered with the International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments (INAS) to jointly promote and grow sailing for people with intellectual impairments globally.

World Sailing and INAS have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see both organisations work together towards the development and implementation of strategies and sailing programmes for people with intellectual impairments. Furthermore, World Sailing and INAS will work to promote awareness and integration within their member organisations.

Director of Antigua Sailabilty, Bob Bailey is absolutely delighted and sees this as a groundbreaking moment for differently abled sailors in Antigua and the region. He says, ‘To put this into context, currently in Antigua the majority of Sailability sailors who visit the National Sailing Academy are intellectually challenged – we do have some very good sailors. Until now however, we have not been able to send them to para events due to the restrictions currently in place which means only physically challenged sailors can sail.” He went on to say, “We are delighted that World Sailing has decided to take this move so that sailing will become a truly inclusive sport. In Antigua we hosted our first inclusive regatta in January and look forward to hosting many more events in the years to come.”

The Chief Instructor of the National Sailing Academy has embarked on a new training programme with a select number of intellectually impaired sailors. “We already have a few sailors who can sail independently and are now embarking on a new programme to teach sailing one-on-one to some of the more confident sailors.  This will allow them to sail solo and potentially move into racing at some point”. He went on to say, “We are currently taking out 80 differently abled sailors each week and look forward to that number growing over the next year as we are able to financially support the growth of the programme.”
