Digicel recently signed a three-year agreement which will see the company become a key sponsor of the National Sailing Academy until 2014.The sponsorship involves funding the upkeep of a 1,720 keel boat for use by the National Sailing Academy Race Team, using the boat every week for sail training & education to compete in national events throughout the year.
With ages ranging from 13 to 18 years of age, the Race Team consisting of Skipper, Shawn Malone, Aldrick Meade 15, Tyvone Richardson 19, Rhone Kirby 13, Janield Smith 16 and Stefan Dundas18, competed in their inaugural race under the Digicel banner this weekend at the Jolly Harbour Caribbean Annual Regatta. The National Sailing Academy is run by the Antigua Yacht Club and offers local children the opportunity to learn the discipline of sailing and encourages others to take part in this key activity that is very much part of Antigua and Barbuda's sporting culture. The youth sailing programme has made a significant contribution to Antigua and to the English Harbour Community, producing many fine sailors and has become a rich source of talent for the marine trades and other areas of the business community.
Janice Sutherland, Commercial Manager, Digicel said "Digicel are proud to be supporting such a worthwhile organisation and assist the National Sailing Academy in their continued effort to encourage, enthuse and educate young people in the art of team work and sailing. Through giving back to the community & supporting the future of the sport amongst Antigua and Barbuda's youth, we look forward to seeing the Youth Sailing Team compete in the coming months and are delighted to help the young get involved in something
so rewarding and fulfilling!"
Elizabeth Jordan, Commodore of the Antigua Yacht Club said: "The National Sailing Academy have been overwhelmed by the real support we have received.
