NACAC 10K RACE HOSTED IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA DECLARED A SUCCESS
Tuesday 30th October 2012

NACAC 10K Race Antigua and Barbuda Leg 1st place Male Winner and 1st place Female Winner both from the Dominican Republic

The Antigua and Barbuda Athletic Association (ABAA) hosted a 10 K Road Race for the North American, Central America and the Caribbean Athletic Association in Antigua and Barbuda yesterday Sunday October 28, 2012. The event, which included athletes from abroad, began at 7 a.m. from the Old Parham and Coronation Road junction and had its finish line in the Antigua Recreation Grounds.

President of the ABAA, Dr. Rodney Williams said that his Association thanked NACAC for giving  Antigua and Barbuda the opportunity to serve as one of five countries across the region to host the event.  In speaking of the 10K race for 18 and over athletes, Dr. Williams stated that, ‘This activity will no doubt serve to strengthen our road programme and sharpen the skills of our athletes as they compete with other runners from the region’.

In order to stimulate interest among the younger age groups, the Association also held a 5K race simultaneously with the 10K event. This was done to encourage younger athletes to take on the challenge of racing longer distances. President Williams also said that his association will be increasing their efforts to encourage more female participation in these events in response to the greater need to be more inclusive in the sporting fraternity and help people in general, lead more healthy lifestyles.

Dr. Williams also took the time to commend all the organizations, especially the Medical Benefits Scheme, which have been hosting an increasing number of recreational events to include hiking, running, walking and other forms of physical activity to assist in addressing metabolic issues such as diabetes as well as overweight or obese conditions.

He also expressed the gratitude of the Association to all those persons and organizations who assisted in making the event the success that it was. Included in his acknowledgements were the Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Winston Baldwin Spencer, Minister of State: Sports, Sen. Hon. Winston Williams Jr., Mr. George Preyer, General Secretary, NACAC, Mr. Dominique Pompey, Coordinator of the NACAC 10K Race, Mr. Wilbur Harrigan, 1st Vice President, Antigua and Barbuda National Olympic Association, the Members of the ABAA Executive, the Officials, Antigua and Barbuda Cadet Corps, VJ’s Bakery, Sandals Grande Antigua Resort, G Productions Online, ABS Radio and Television, Observer Media Group, Emergency Medical and Sports Medical Services, Ministry of Sports, Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross, Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association, Rural West Community Centre, LMR Signs and Signs Plus.
