UPRISING BOXING GYM BRINGS HOME GOLD FROM ST. LUCIAN TOURNAMENT. CONGRATULATIONS!

Uprising Boxing Gym Team

Heartiest congratulations are extended to the Management and Boxers of the Uprising Boxing Gym on their outstanding performance in the recent boxing match in St. Lucia. You have represented your country well. The Ministry of Sports also extends the very best wishes, to you all, for a continued bright future in the sport of boxing.

The Department of Sports also joins in extending a special 'thank you' to sponsors Sugar Ridge for supporting Sports Development in Antigua and Barbuda.

The details of the tournament are provided below for circulation and further commendation.

Name of event: Independence "Hands in Gloves not on Guns" Boxing Tournament
(Originally the OECS Boxing championship which was delayed due to the passage of Hurricane Tomas last year)

Organizers: St. Lucia Amateur Boxing Association

Countries in attendance: Dominica, Antigua, St. Vincent, Grenada and St. Lucia

Dates:February 25th and 26th 2011
 
Uprising Boxing Gym, representing Antigua & Barbuda:

* Head Coach & Trainer: Anthony Severin

* Assistant Coach: Rolston Ryan
 
* Alston Ryan (17 years), originally a Fly weight but fought Bantam weight. Won: Gold

* Wynton Phillips (17), fought Light weight. Won: two (2) Gold

* Gavin Grant (20), Heavy weight. Won: gold

* Sonny Benjamin (29), Light Welter weight. Won: Silver

* Karl Warner (30), Middle weight. Won: Silver

* Tuvia Lewis (21), Light Heavy weight. Won: Silver
 
The team traveled early on Thursday morning to St. Lucia and were met by the St. Lucia Boxing Association's president, Mr. David Christopher and the well known Mr. Joseph "Reds" Perreira (Past President). The boxers had their weigh-in on Friday morning. The first bouts took place on Friday evening, on which day a Referee training session was held as well. Anthony Severin attended this training as the only non-referee / non-judge. Saturday was the second and final evening of boxing.
 
The team's travel to/from St. Lucia was generously sponsored by Sugar Ridge (Antigua). LIAT airline ensured that all persons, their luggage and boxing gear arrived on time. The group returned on a high note on Sunday evening to Antigua.
