Every Saturday afternoon we are out sailing off Jolly Harbour and Five Islands Harbour in an “all comers” competitive sailing event for local and visiting yachts and can boast that we have up to 13 boats on many Saturdays. Two weeks ago there was a Catamaran class when two Cats decided they wanted to join in the fun! We are well into our Autumn Series and Franklyn Braithwaite who was an Olympic sailor is doing really well in the Cruising Class. It is a tight contest for all sailors who are competing to a JHYC club handicap system called SPH (Sailing Performance Handicap).
Sunday Dinghy Racing
Every Sunday afternoon we can also boast that we have up to 13 people racing Laser dinghies in a round robin event with A & B finals. Our top racers are Al Ashford and Roger Hodgkinson. The novices are keen and eager to learn so they can beat the “Big Boys”. It is always a great social day with a BBQ on the beach. Many come down just to watch the racing, join in the fun and lime.
JHR Caribbean Annual Regatta
Being held November 28th and 29th, we have now added a Junior Laser Challenge between the juniors of Jolly Harbour Yacht Club and Antigua Yacht Club supervised by Karl James, AYC Dinghy Training Manager and a former Olympic champion.
We are also putting out a challenge for all-girl crews and hope to attract a Catamaran Class as well as a Carriacou Sloop Class!
JHYC gratefully acknowledges the help and support of many individuals and Antiguan companies, but, particularly Anjo Insurance, A & F Sails, The Foredeck Bar, Sugar Ridge Developments and Signpro. Please see our website www.jhycantigua.com for complete details on all of our events!
