The Antigua Yacht Club (AYC), in collaboration with the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club (JHYC), is proud to announce the 5th edition of the highly anticipated Sandy Island Race, scheduled for Saturday, January 24, 2026. Conceived by Richard Archer, the event has quickly grown to become one of the premier races on the Antiguan sailing calendar.
The Sandy Island Race features a unique circular course that allows boats to start from either the AYC or JHYC start lines. Each leg is scored independently, with the overall winner determined by the best corrected time over both legs, completing the full circle.
According to event director and AYC Rear Commodore Sandy Mair of SY Cricket, the course offers an enjoyable yet strategic sail that challenges skippers to use skillful navigation to minimize distance. "It’s the closest we have to a proper offshore course," said Mair. "And unlike other events, it gives participants the flexibility to start from either end, eliminating the need for lengthy delivery sails."
Both Falmouth-based and Jolly Harbour-based sailors are encouraged to participate in what promises to be another exciting and unifying event on the racing calendar.
