FINAL FOUR ACTION IN WARRIORS CUP TAKES PLACE TODAY Sunday 4th September 2011
Its semi-final day Sunday inthe Cool & Smooth Men’s Championship Cup of the Warriors Cup at the English Harbour Playing Field.
Hoppers, who won the fist-ever tournament in 2005, oppose their neighbours and newcomers, Hill Top, in a Grays Green derby at 4pm to be followed by Swetes against Jennings Grenades at 6pm, for places in the final at a date to be announced.
With the exception of Grenades, the three other teams have been unbeaten in the tournament which sets up the prospect of two fascinating semi-finals.
Hoppers, who may include their two national team stars – George Dublin and Tamarley Thomas – also have one of the leading goal-scorers in the completion in Thomas’ younger brother Tony who has netted six times so far.
The Green Bay men will face a Hill Top side brimming with confidence and full of youth and exuberance. In captain Yafu Lake, winger Tavin Crump as well as goalkeeper, Randy Nicholas, Hill Top possesses players with Premier Division experience in the first outing in the Warriors Cup.
Swetes, boasting of the leading marksman, Akeem Weekes, with seven strikes, have not scored less than four goals in the previous four matches. Weekes along with Gavin Richards, who has netted four times, have potent attack with supply in midfield coming from Errol DeCastro.
However, Grenades also have an effective strike-force in five-goal star Elroy Shaw and Kerry Anthony who have found the back of the net four times to date. Their defence have been marshaled by Lester Shaw who has been a model of consistency all tournament.
Organisers say patrons at the games will be asked to make a contribution of at least $2 to the staging of the tournament.
