LIBERTA SPORTS CLUB CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY Monday 24th January 2011
The club’s seven past presidents - Cotril George, Eliston Adams, Chet Green, Hayden Walsh (deceased), Rowan Benjamin, Denmore Roberts and Rody Christopher will be honored for their contribution to the club’s continuous development and according to the present incumbent, Kenny Benjamin this event is a public thank you for all their hard work: “We are very proud of our club’s achievements and longevity and the evening is to thank all those who have significantly contributed to our continuity from past presidents to sponsors and special fans who have assisted us by giving of their time and energy year after year.”
Benjamin adds that the celebration marks the beginning of a new phase of the club’s development: “We have invested a lot of time, energy and money in upgrading the clubs’ facility so that it can be enjoyed by the club members, the community and the students of the Liberta School. Everything we do is for the betterment of our young and not so young sports persons; the Liberta Sports Club really wants to offer sports for all.”
In the 20 years several club members have gone onto represent their club, country and region in various sports including cricketers Kenny Benjamin – West Indies, Wilden “Polo” Cornwall, Ricky Christopher, Curtis “Hammer Roberts, Hayden and Vaughn “hungry Walsh, Kadeem Philiip and Rakheem “Jimbo Cornwall – Leeward Islands with many more representing Antigua/Barbuda. Whilst Hayden Walsh Jr. and Avia Christian are the club's young players for the future.
In football Mocco Ralph, Chester Joseph, Pope Spencer and Clint Martin are just a few to represent the national team, while Rowan “Porridge” Benjamin is the national coach for the last couple of years.
In volleyball Telbert Benjamin, Dion Francis, Sean Simon and Vanroy “Fisher” Richards have represented the nation while Vern Quinland is the club's lone female volleyball representative. Orson James is the national coach while Alister Benjamin is an international referee candidate.
The Liberta Club’s Motto is ‘liberty and togetherness‘and it’s one the club members and executive over the years have tried to live up to.
