NATIONAL SAILING ACADEMY OFFICIALLY OPENS
Friday 31st January 2014

On Saturday 25th January, Her Excellency, the Governor General, Dame Louise Lake-Tack, officially opened the new National Sailing Academy Headquarters in Dockyard Drive, English Harbour.

The afternoon event was attended by some 170 people including the following:
Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation John Maginley;
Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs, Senator Mervyn Richard;
Minister of Culture Eleston Adams; Senator Winston Williams; Director of Sports Heather Samuel.

Several of our sponsors were present and we have a board showing those who have made significant donations.  We thank them all as they are the ones who have enabled us to get to this point since the academy was founded in 2010.

Our free sailing lessons for the school children will move from the Yacht Club to the Academy from mid-February, and we shall be able to add more schools at our new facility.

This is the new group of children from Cobbs Cross School who had their first sailing lesson last week.

It has taken many months to develop the property so it can become a viable water sports centre and, with almost all of the infrastructure now completed, we have a floating dock on which we can berth the Academy, and other boats, as well as a slipway for our dinghies.  The slipway will also offer haul and launch facilities for inflatables and trailered boats.  Our water sports will include dinghy sailing, keelboat racing, windsurfing, rowing, kayaking and paddle boarding.

On the land side, there is a small hotel offering reasonable priced accommodation, and a multipurpose room which acts as a classroom or function room. The academy is set in one acre of ground with lovely gardens and will be available for hire as a venue for parties and weddings etc.

We shall be holding regular social events and ‘fun-raisers’ – the first of these was on Saturday at sundown and was the first weekly ‘100 club’ lottery draw. Our bar will be open on Saturdays from 5 pm for this weekly event and other times as appropriate.

We also announced the introduction of our ‘Antigua Sailability’ programme for the disabled children and adults of Antigua.  We are fortunate to have received a donation of two specially built trimarans from the City of Peterborough, UK.   Our Director of Sailabilty, Mr. Bob Bailey, spoke about the programme and presented Her Excellency a framed picture of Peterborough Cathedral – a gift from the Mayor of the City.  We are looking for volunteers to help us start this worthwhile programme so please contact us if you can help in any way.

Please feel free to visit our new headquarters and see the facilities we have to offer.
