HURRICANE SHELTERS FOR 2025 Monday 26th May 2025
Forty-nine structures have so far been designated as shelters for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season which officially runs from June to November.
Personnel from the Ministry of Works joined with District Disaster Coordinators (DDCs) to inspect the buildings for their suitability.
As is customary, these structures consist of schools, churches and community centres among others.
Each disaster district, which is manned by the DDCs who volunteer on behalf of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), will have at least one shelter but not all communities will boast a shelter.
NODS continues to encourage residents to ensure that their homes are fit to withstand the impact of a hurricane so that moving to a public shelter is the last option. When going to a shelter, individuals should take their personal items to include canned or other food that do not need cooking, water, change of clothes, hygiene products, blankets, sheets, sleeping cots and other needed supplies as these are not available in the public shelters.
A team of trained volunteers is responsible for the management of the public shelters in Antigua and Barbuda. The list of shelters can be viewed on NODS facebook page.
