JAPANESE AGREEMENT CONTINUE TO MATERIALISE
Tuesday 3rd July 2018

A 10 million Japanese yen grant aid project continues to be realized in Antigua and Barbuda with the installation of community disaster response storage units and weather stations in several communities.

Two of the storage units, known as BOKOMI stations, were recently erected at the Police Headquarters as part of a training session conducted by Japanese Engineer Masayuki Aoki (o-kee) with District Disaster Coordinators.

The District Disaster Coordinators will then be responsible for the construction of another 15 units in their respective districts, including Barbuda.

In addition to the storage units, two weather stations - one in Cobbs Cross and one at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium, were set up for the Met Office to help in the gathering of multi-hazard data. In all, the agreement provides for 12 stations.

The Japanese agreement also calls for the provision of megaphones for the Ministry of Education, Personal Protective Equipment and a Land Search and Rescue vehicle for the Fire Department.

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) extends appreciation to the Japanese government for its patience as this project should have already begun but had to be re-scheduled due to the impact of Hurricane Irma.
