ANTIGUA & BARBUDA ROCKED BY EARTHQUAKE
Wednesday 18th April 2018

Press Release - 17th April 2018: Antigua and Barbuda was rocked by a magnitude 4.4 earthquake this afternoon around 4:26.

Information from the UWI Seismic Research Centre in Trinidad says the quake was located latitude 16.947 North and longitude 61.819 West at a depth of 21.43 kilometres.

Reports are that the quake was felt in countries like Montserrat and St. Kitts.

The earthquake was strong enough to cause damage to vulnerable structures and NODS is therefore advising that any reports of damage be made to the office.  Persons can call 464-8456.

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) is reiterating the need for residents to be aware of the steps to be taken during an earthquake particularly Drop, Cover and Hold (DCH), which has been scientifically proven to reduce injury and death.

Among the safe spots during an earthquake are under supported archways, against inside walls, and under a heavy desk or sturdy table.

Individuals should stay away from danger spots like windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall unsecured furniture and stairs.
