STAN PEARSON: CO-FOUNDER OF THE RORC CARIBBEAN 600 Friday 1st March 2024
Stan Pearson, co-founder of the RORC Caribbean 600, played a crucial role in shaping this iconic offshore yacht race. His collaboration with John Burnie birthed the idea for the race, aiming to challenge sailors with a circumnavigation of the Caribbean islands, starting and ending in Antigua. Despite modest beginnings in 2008 with just 24 yachts,
Pearson's passion and Burnie's vision propelled the event to success. The race, akin to the famed Rolex Fastnet, offers sailors a unique tactical test amidst the Caribbean's stunning scenery and challenging conditions. Pearson's legacy extends beyond the race itself, as his dedication to sailing and community-building continues to impact the yachting world.
Stan's influence was not limited to the RORC. An active member of the Antigua Yacht Club, he brought his passion for sailing to support events, including the internationally recognised Antigua Sailing Week and the Nelson Pursuit Race.
The once-popular Superyacht Challenge was in the doldrums. In collaboration with Paul Deeth, Stan breathed new life into the event. As the yachts tackle the race later in March, there will be a sadness along with the excitement as Stan's absence will be felt.
As we celebrated the RORC Caribbean 600 and look forward to the Superyacht Challenge, it is fitting to honour Stan Pearson's memory and acknowledge his enduring contribution to the sport.
