Did you know?
Turtles are reptiles of the Order Testudines (teh-styoo-duh-neez)! They are characterized by shells that are developed mainly from their ribs.
There are two major Groups of turtles that fall under this Order:
1. Pleurodira- turtles that cannot retract their necks, but instead bend them sideways, beneath the front of their shell.
2. Cryptodira- turtles that can fully retract their necks into their shell.
There are more than 350 species of turtles in the world, including land-dwelling tortoises and freshwater terrapins!
