ATRI CUP SPARKS RUGBY FEVER IN ANTIGUA
Monday 5th May 2025

Rugby took center stage this past weekend as the island hosted the fifth edition of the Antigua Touch Rugby International (ATRI) Cup (2024–2025 season), bringing together athletes, families, and fans for a day of spirited competition, youth development, and community celebration.

In a thrilling shakeup, the reigning champions from the last tournament just six weeks ago the Antigua Grammar School boys ceded the trophy to this tournament’s victors, the Harbour Rats, who delivered an outstanding performance to secure the title. The ATRI Cup continues to grow in stature, drawing attention from across the region, but this year’s event stood out not just for its elite-level competition, but for its milestone in youth engagement.

For the first time, an Under-10 match was featured on the tournament schedule. In a high-energy showdown, the Wasps overcame the Young Harbourians, signaling a promising future for the sport on the island. The match was met with cheers and excitement, as the next generation of players took their place in the spotlight.

The tournament wasn’t just about rugby. Families were treated to an all-day festival atmosphere complete with bouncy castles, a live DJ, and a vibrant end-of-season party hosted at the popular 268 Brewery. The blend of sportsmanship and celebration created a memorable experience for all in attendance.

At the heart of this rugby revival is Mr. Andy Katoa, former NFL player and coach for both the Tonga National and USA Sevens rugby teams. Since relocating to Antigua, Katoa has been instrumental in grassroots rugby development, partnering with the Old Harbourian Rugby Club and local schools, including a key 18-month initiative with Antigua Grammar School.

Looking ahead, the momentum continues as the next phase of rugby expansion targets St. Joseph School, with several more institutions expressing interest in joining the movement. The Old Harbourian Rugby Club, now in its tenth year, is more active than ever, serving as a hub for training, community outreach, and matchday excitement.

"Rugby in Antigua isn’t just growing it’s thriving," said Katoa. "We're building more than players; we're building a culture of discipline, teamwork, and joy. And we’re just getting started."

Whether you're interested in playing, coaching, or simply cheering from the sidelines, there's never been a better time to get involved. For more information, contact +1 (268) 724-9252.
