MAKING ADVANCES IN COKE TOURNAMENT Monday 6th August 2012
Our NOC sponsored junior players arrived into St. Lucia to commence competition in the CoCo Cola LCA ITF junior tournament. Monday, August 6, 2012 was the start of the under 14 round robin qualifiers and under 18 qualifiers. Competing for Antigua in the Grade 5 tournament are:
Under 14 players:- Jessica Isaac, Cordell Williams jr and Justice Christopher
Under 18 players:- D'Jeri Raymond, Shakir Elvin and Jody Maginley. Both Jody Maginley and D'Jeri Raymond already recieved direct entry into the main draw and will commence play Tuesday.
In the boys Under 18 qualifiers Shakir Elvin easily advanced to the final round of the qualifiers after defeating Brian Williams of Grenada in round one 6-0, 6-0; he then defeated Justin Higgs of Bahamas 6-2, 6-1 advancing him to the qualifying round finals.
In the girls under 14 round robin qualifiers Jessica Isaac was successful in both of her matches played today. These two wins garantees her a spot in the main draw scheduled to start on Tuesday 7th August. In her first match of the day Isaac defeated Surabhi Gupta of St. Lucia 4-1, 4-0 ; she then went on to take out Luka Lyttle of St. Vincent in straight set 4-0, 4-2. Isaac is scheduled to play her final round robin qualifier tomorrow 6th August, 2012.
The boys Under 14 round robin qualifiers saw mixed results, Cordell Willams jr was successful in one of his two matches played today. In match one William jr was defeated by Shaquille Jn. Mari (LCA) 1-4, 1-4. However a major turn around was seen in match 2 where Williamjr ousted De Jennis Simmons (VIN) 4-1, 4-0. Williams who is in a round robin group of four will have to overcome Taquel Lewis of St. Lucia to easily advance to the main draw.
Justice Christopher who is in a round robin group of three was unsuccessful his only two round robin matches. Christopher came up against Jean phillip Murray of LCA and lost 0-4, 0-4. Later he came up against Nabeel Mohammed of Trinidad
losing 0-4, 0-4.
As the tournament moves forward we want to thank all those who assisted these athletes to be able to compete in this tournament- The National Olympic Committee who provided the athletes airfare, the ABTA, The Jolly Harbour Tennis Academy(Jessica Isaac), Ministry of Sports and thethe parents without whom this would not have been possible.
