RESOUNDING END TO HTC 12 & UNDER JUNIOR TOURNAMENT Monday 4th June 2012
NEW 12 & UNDER CHAMPIONS NAMED:
Callum Drepaul boys Winner
Ashley Bersma girls Winner
Saturday 2nd June - The courts of Halcyon Tennis Club were on fire. Like the French Open
we saw some upsets but all in all we saw remarkable competition from the upcoming 12 and Under Juniors of our twin island state.
The defending 12 & Under Champion Ayden Ambrose was ousted in the quarterfinals by Justice Christopher (St. Anthony's Secondary) in three sets 1-4, 4-2 (7-2). Christopher went on to the finals after defeating Nicholas Fuller (St. Anthony's) in the sem- finals also in three sets 4-5, 4-2 (7-0); Christopher was eventually taken down in the finals by Callum Drepaul (Island Academy) 3-5, 4-2 ( 7-3) who earned his spot in the finals after defeating 8 year old Aiden Fuller
(St. Nicholas Primary)in the semi finals 4-0, 4-0.
The girls competition was smaller in size but not necessarily smaller in the level of competition. Ashley Bersma (St, Nicholas Primary) the current 10 & Under Girls Champion showed true grit in her 1st 12 & Under Competition Finals against Shereese Henry (St. John's Catholic Primary). Bersma took down the more seasoned Under 12 player in straights sets 4-1, 4-2.
There is never a looser in developmental tennis, in the consolation round the boys consolation title was taken by Alexis Layne (St. Anthony's secondary) who defeated Seth Joseph (St. Nicholas Primary) in the finals 5-4(7-4), 4-2. The Girls consolation title was taken by Hannah Sternhagen (St. John's Lutheran) who defeated Aliyah Ephraim (St. Anthony's Secondary) 3-5, 4-2 (8-6).
The Club and the ABTA thanks Mrs. Nadine Fuller who has been appointed to officiate all junior tournaments. We also thank our sponsor for providing water and prizes for the players and winners respectively. We also thank the Media especially the Observer Newspaper,
Carib Arena, good morning JO JO and Antigua Nice for promoting this tournament. Finally we thank Halcyon by Rex Resort who continues to open up their courts to us providing a place for some of our juniors to harness their skills.
We encourage coaches, parents and principals to encourage your athletes, childeren and students helping them to understand how important a role sports plays in their education. Sports teaches discipline, time managment, grace, empathy and organisation skills.
