WADADLI PEN TURNS 10, PROVIDES MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO WIN Monday 6th January 2014
The Wadadli Youth Pen Prize launches its 10th anniversary Challenge with opportunities for young writers and visual artists of Antigua and Barbuda, 35 years and younger. For the first time, teachers of all ages could also win with the introduction of the Lead by Example Teacher’s Prize.
As usual, writers are invited to submit Caribbean-inspired poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction; up to three pieces; any style, subject or genre; 600 words or less. As always, those submitting are asked to surprise us: let your imagination fly, then write, review, and share your best efforts. Additionally, artists are invited to register now for the opportunity to create cover art for short-listed stories. For those artistically inclined, you get to be a part of the storytelling process by visually interpreting the story, the way graphic artists do during the process of creating and publishing books. Teachers, meanwhile, are challenged to write a story appropriate for the class level at which they teach. Winners will be selected in each of the named categories. There will also be recognition given, as has become Wadadli Pen’s pattern, to the school with the most submissions.
The first Wadadli Pen Challenge was launched in 2004. As the Challenge, designed to nurture and showcase artistic, and specifically youthful expression, turns 10, we look forward to the best year yet in terms of the quantity and quality of submissions. As always though, we’d rather receive less if it proves to be more in terms of dynamic and inspired storytelling; the Wadadli Pen Challenge is not just a contest but an opportunity to tap into your talents, push yourself, and strive for your personal best.
