10 FEMALE CARIBBEAN AUTHORS YOU SHOULD KNOW Monday 19th February 2018
When our artists, athletes, and other personalities shine, Antigua and Barbuda shines, and Antiguanice enjoys turning up the spotlight. This time we turn our attention to the world of literature, and Antiguan and Barbudan writer Joanne C. Hillhouse: one of Literary Hub’s ‘10 Caribbean Female Writers You Should Know (and Add to Your American Lit Syllabus)’.
Literary Hub is a trusted source for all things literary. The Gerty Dambury article included five writers from Jamaica, leading off with the legendary Una Marson who was the first producer of BBC’s Caribbean Voices which helped ignite the Caribbean literary canon, one Dominican writer, a Bahamian and a Guyanese poet, and a Haitian writer.
The list specifically referenced Hillhouse’s novel Oh Gad! saying, “With this book, Joanne Hillhouse tells a well-known story: how does it feel to return home when it is no longer truly home? Nikki, the main character, was born in Antigua but raised in the USA. When she comes back to Antigua for her mother’s funeral, she decides to remain on the island. Turmoil and chaos ensue. Joanne Hillhouse is a powerful writer, raising questions directly and with great energy.”
