2011 PAN AMERICAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS - ANTIGUA'S RESULTS Friday 13th May 2011
Antigua and Barbuda cyclists competed at the 2011 Pan American Cycling Championships held in Medellin, Columbia, 3-8th May.
Robert Marsh took part in the 21 mile Individual Time Trial on 6th May where he placed 32nd. Marsh completed the 21 mile course in a time of 58:59 which considered as a commendable performance of the English speaking Caribbean riders. The Pan American Male Individual Time Trial was won by Leandro Messineo of Argentina.
Tamiko Butler had a commendable performance at her first major outing in the female event. The 20 year old Butler contested amongst a fleet of professional elite riders to place 21st of a field of 32 riders. Tamiko Butler completes the 10 mile course in a time of 31:34.
Sunday 8th May, Medellin – Tamiko Butler contested the 67 mile female’s road race in a field of 62 professional and semi pro females. Tamiko stayed in the 3rd group to complete her first major road race. Butler placed 43rd, recording the same time as what given to 29th place of 2:47.07 as the group came home together. Tamiko was the best of the English speaking Caribbean of what is deemed as a commendable ride. Both the Individual Time Trial and Road Race was won by Olympic Gold medallist and Winter Olympic Speed Skater Gold medallist, Canada’s most celebrated female athlete, Clara Hughes who completed the course in a time of 2:23.56.
Robert Marsh and Jyme Bridges unable to finish the men’s 113 mile Road Race. Marsh was separate during the 2nd lap of the 11 lap course and retired after completing 6 laps. Jyme Bridges stayed in the lead bunch for 5 laps and retired after completing 8 laps. Gregory Panizo of Brazil won the 2011 Pan American Road Championships in a time of 4:03.55. 130 riders started the men’s Road Race which resulted with 67 finishers Jyme Bridges and Tamiko Butler were unable capture any of the 15 qualifying spots for the 2011 Pan American Games which will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico, October 13th to 30th. Robert Marsh is already qualified but has to do a lot of work to have a commendable performance at the October Games.
The National Olympic Committee made contribution towards assisting Marsh toward preparing for the Guadalajara Games which he recently started his preparation. Marsh and Jyme next major event will be the APUA Inet OECS Cycling Championships to be held in Antigua, 5th June 2011. The Antigua and Barbuda Pan American Championships participation was made possible through the assistance of the Antigua and Barbuda Olympic Committee.
