CUSHION CLUB THANKS Monday 22nd June 2009
The Cushion Club expresses sincere thanks to Chief Librarian Dorothea Nelson who was the newest guest at the Saturday morning reading group. Ms. Nelson shared a short story and several Louise Bennett poems with the children. They had the chance to read to her as well and ask her questions about the library.
For the librarian, who is keen on community outreach, it was an opportunity to deepen ties. She encouraged the children to make use of the library for research and other purposes. She introduced them to the library’s children’s summer programme and the upcoming word-a-day vocabulary building programme, encouraging those who were not yet members to become members of the Antigua Public Library. She also told them about the new library, which is currently under construction.
The children enjoyed the visit with the Chief Librarian and were thankfully for her offer of a book donation. They extended an open invitation to her to return.
The Cushion Club is a kids’ reading club more than 10 years old which meets every Saturday at the Senior Citizens Centre on Elms Drive. Previous guest readers have included authors Floree Williams, Joy Lawrence, and Patricia Harrington. Club organizers are always eager to have these visitors in to capture the children’s imaginations and stir in them a love for the written word. Regular volunteer readers are also sought.
