FIRST EVER LIVE OPERA PERFORMANCES IN ANTIGUA Thursday 15th March 2018
March 13, 2018 – The first ever performances of live opera in Antigua will be staged on April 14 and 15 by a group of professional opera singers being flown from Italy to the island by the newly formed Antigua Opera Society.
The first performance is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, at Catherine’s Sur La Plage at Pigeon Beach, and is priced at US$185 per person. This includes a drinks reception, champagne, wine and a five-course dinner accompanied by a selection of popular arias by the Italian opera stars.
The second performance will be staged outdoors on the evening of Sunday, April 15, at the Antigua National Sailing Academy on Dockyard Drive, Falmouth, and is priced at US$50 per person. The ticket for this event includes a welcome glass of wine and the performance. Food, BBQ and a full bar will also be available before the performance and during intermissions.
The Antigua Opera Society was founded by Marcel and Aneta Polk of Mamora Bay, both serious opera fans, as a non-profit corporation with the mission of contributing funds to Antigua music organisations and students to encourage the study of music, both vocal and instrumental.
His Excellency, The Honourable Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua, has accepted the role as the Society’s Ambassador.
The Society produced an outdoor performance of Puccini's La Boheme in May 2017 on an estate in Poland, and plans to stage an entire outdoor production of a famous Italian opera on Antigua in the spring of 2019. Plans for that production is already underway.
Reservations to the performances are available by calling Catherine’s Cafe on (268) 460-5050, or the National Sailing Academy on (268) 725-3542/464-2645, for advance ticket purchase.
