GUYANA DEFEATS ABBA ALL STARS Monday 23rd July 2012
Guyana anThe Sports Department of the Ministry of Sports hosted a youth basketball team out of Guyana, July 15—21, 2012. However, this was not without a bit of controversy. The Sports Department had received an early request from the Guyana team to visit Antigua but the information did not reach the Antigua/Barbuda Basketball Association until closer to the Guyana team’s arrival date.
According to the President of the ABBA, Jules Bowen, a letter was requested from the host, to establish proper protocol but up until the team’s first scheduled game, the Association had not received such. Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Sports, Mr. Evans (Jawaki) Jones indicated that he had some earlier dis-cussions with the ABBA President and thought there was a good understanding, and thus was surprised of the President’s unfavorable comments in the media.
However, both sports officials eventually resolved the misunderstandings to have the ABBA Youth Team com-pete against Guyana. The Guyana team was only able to compete in three games,
defeating the Clarehall School, in the first, 76—72, at the Ottos Basketball Court. The second game on Wednesday night, July 18, was rained out with the Guy-ana team leading at the time of stoppage.
On Friday night at the JSC Sports Complex, it was a close call for the ABBA All Stars. Both teams kept ex-changing leads with Guyana finishing the first half by a 3 point lead, 27 –24. The second half was much the same hard fought spirit, but the ABBA All Stars made several unforced turnovers to allow Guyana to win 54—53.
For Guyana, Dominique Douglas and Joseph Gilkes each shot 12pts and 11pts, respectively. For ABBA All-Stars, Devon Benjamin sank 18pts, while Stephen McDonald contributed 11pts.d ABBA all stars exchange leads, but Guyana comes off the court victorious.
