In a year where Stefano Mitchell made his first Olympic team he has not stopped working hard for himself and Antigua and Barbuda. His persistnece continues to pay off as seen by a new record breaking performance. Competing at the South West Short Course Winter Championships in the United Kingdom he broke 23 second barrier for the 50 meter freestyle in the 25 meter pool.

After threatening his personal best of 23.31 with a heats swim of 23.32 he would crash through that barrier in the final . Mitchell competing for Plymouth Leander would smash his personal standard and the national record of 22.85 to place second in the final with a time of 22.83 . The former national record belonged to Jadon Wuilliez set in July of this year. Stefano is also the owner of the long course national record at 23.12 set on May 21 this year
The Gold went to Calvin Fry of Mount Kelly in a personal best of 22.20 . Third went to Alex Painter of Millfied in 23.04.
There would be other personal bests at the Championships. He dropped from 51.00 to 50.91 in the 100m freestyle. .In the 200m freestyle He entered the championships with a best time of 1:57.02. In the preliminaries that was lowered to 1:56.82 . He negative split the final with splits of 57.55 and 57.45 to stop the clock in 1:55.00.
At the Tokyo Games he swam the 100m freestyle and recorded a time of 51.64.
