BARBUDA TRAINING
Thursday 14th July 2011

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) and the Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross are working together to expand the membership base for disaster management in Barbuda.

Director of NODS Philmore Mullin completed a two-day training Wednesday in shelter management and damage assessment for approximately 15 volunteers on the sister isle.
This will help to enhance the time frame in which damage impact information is submitted to the National Emergency Operations Centre and improve the shelter management process on the island.

While in Barbuda, Mullin also visited a mini-warehouse and Disaster Office under construction with funding from the US Agency for International Development (US AID).

On completion, this will house an office for the Disaster Coordinator and staff and an area to store relief items for emergencies and disasters.

This is important since it can be very challenging to get items to Barbuda during the emergency phase especially after a hurricane.

Further discussions will have to take place with the Chairman of the Council to improve some of the management issues that need to be addressed especially where it pertains to the executive committee meeting to assess the level of readiness on the sister isle.
