CYCLING SEASON HAS NOW COMMENCED

The Antigua and Barbuda Cycling Association 2012 race and activities season officially started on Sunday 19th February.

The season annual march-pass took place at the St. Andrews Anglican 6:15 mass. The cycling executives and cyclists partake in the service delivered Rev. Dean Smithen where his recognized the attendance of the association and gave his blessing and prayed for the safety on the road and good health and successes in our local, regional and international competition.
 

The Opening of the season continued at 2:30 pm on Sunday afternoon with the staging of the Annual Family Fun Ride. Over 250 riders turn out to participate in the fun activity.

The opening season fun ride is a gesture to get everyone involve in bike riding. It is undoubtedly a strong family event as it is promoted as an activity for the entire family. The International Cycling Union and it sports was tag last year as the strongest supporter towards health and well-being.

The testimonial of the riders who participated was strongly to the tune of strengthen their health and well-being, to keep fit, to lose weight, to have fun, to do an activity with their family and to ride with the racers before they go on the speed circuit.

To roll off the start of the season and fun ride, World Masters Sprint Cycling Champion, 74 year old, Ferdie DeGannes along with former Cycling Association President, 64 year old Lawrence Dimples Gonslaves along with the Association’s Secretary Roland Morgan and others as they completed the full 14 mile route.

The Cycling is proud of another successful opening season and thanks the supporters who participated to make the season opener go according to plan. The success also came for the contribution of the follow business entities: Bike Plus, Frank B. Armstrong and Lucozade, Charlies Bottling Antigua Ltd, Chef 2 U Events, Charlie Service Station Food Brokerage Services, Ochie’s Bike Shop, Popeshead Street, Anjo Wholesale and Premiere Beverages.
 
Meanwhile, the Opening Season activities continue this coming Sunday 26th Febuary as the Cycling Association will host their first race for the 2012 season. The ABACA 45 Mile Circuit Race will take place at 2pm on the roads surrounding the Pam Am Base at Shell Beach Coolidge area. The course known to the cyclists as the Pam AM Base Circuit and known to make popular by one of Antigua’s cycling greats, Robert Peters.
 
The riders will race in different categories: A-Class Open will feature Number 1 ranked Cyclist Robert Marsh, OECS and National Champion, Jyme Bridges, Guyanese sensation, Godfrey Pollydore, Marvin Spencer, Dale Richardson, Alvin Merrick, Clint Henry, Ken Jackson, Neil Lloyd and other whilst B-Class will feature the future stars including the female amongst the males, Tamiko Butler, Walton Francis, Mervin Gore, Ashfield Vigo, Gilrick Pryce, Omaro James, National Sailor – Ashley Rhodes and track & field star – N’Kosie Barnes. Junior-Class will feature Tesheed Gordon, Tristan Matthew along with the cadets’ class riders, Joel Phillip and Nigel Fabian. #1 ranked female cyclist, Triathlete, Lindsay Duffy will battle the female class along with Kevinia Francis.

The Association will also be introducing a Sports Class as a fun and beginners class. This event will run separate from the featured event and is open to all ages, various bikes and focus on the individuals who want to experience bike racing amongst their beginners. The winner of this class will be access for promotion to the B-Class category.

Sunday’s event will demonstrate speed and cornering skills in a picnic atmosphere as the start finish will be placed on the lawn of Shell beach. The season opening race will end with an after party hosted by the Rattlers Club and Matthews Auto Parts.
