The Beautification efforts of the airport gardens held on Saturday December 19th and termed as “a Christmas present to Antigua and Barbuda” has been deemed a Resounding success. ABITPC ( Antigua Barbuda independent Tourism Promotion Corp) and the Antigua Barbuda Horticulture Society Joined forces to come out with some nearly 60 strong to “attack” the overgrown bougainvillea and gardens of the surrounds of the gardens at V.C. Bird Airport. The early morning efforts started at 7 a.m. With a blessing by Canon Richardson and the group went into high gear pruning and chopping back the over grown vegetation. The group consisted of some 25 ladies , 15 Stanford gardeners and an additional 14 gardeners whose employers offered to help in the cause.
The Honorable Prime Minister Baldwyn Spencer made an on site visit at 9 a.m. And toured the grounds and met the press. He congratulated the volunteer efforts of the two groups. Public Relations officer of ABITPC congratulated the volunteers for their efforts and also the Horticultural Society for Joining ABITPC in the beautification efforts. Gilkes commented that while this was a one time effort, due to the great success, there will be discussions on “the way forward” and how these civic minded organizations can work together to continue the restoration of the airport gardens
