TOURISM OFFICIAL ATTENDS SEATRADE MED CRUISE CONVENTION
Wednesday 28th November 2012

Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Officials participated in another successful showcasing of the destination, this time in Marseilles France, during the 9th Seatrade Med from November 26th – 29th which the largest gathering of Cruise Tourism Officials in Europe.

The two-member delegation made up of CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, Colin C. James, and Nathan Dundas President of the Antigua and Barbuda Cruise Association, conducted a packed schedule of meetings with European Cruise Executives.

“The destination has set its sights on making greater inroads into the European cruise market and came together as part of a group of 12 destinations along with the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) to attend the event. The joint “Caribbean Village” concept provided greater efficiency to our marketing effort said CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority Colin James.

“With Antigua and Barbuda and the rest of the Caribbean facing increased competition from other global cruising regions and a challenging marketplace, we view the growing European market as an opportunity to extend our reach and drive new business to the destination” James added.

In a meeting with Tine Oelmann, Director, Port Operations, Shore Excursions & Ground Handling, for Tui Cruises, Oelmann commented that Antigua and Barbuda continues to perform well and will be included in their itinerary for this season and the ensuing season 2013/14. The Mein Schiff 2 will now call on Mondays instead of Sundays. This new development will increase the revenue spend per passenger and so provide a much welcome boost to local stakeholders.

Nathan Dundas said “our main objective at Seatrade Med was to meet specifically with the European Cruise Lines whose business to Antigua has been growing steadily, and observe some of the industry best practices being used in the Mediterranean. In order to maintain our competitiveness we can learn from other regions”. This is critical if the Caribbean is to remain the world’s number ultimate cruise destination, offering world-class facilities and services to cruise ships, as well as innovative experiences to their guests” added Dundas.

In contrast to the North American based Cruise lines, there has been a significant shift towards more cruise lines from Europe who have included Antigua and Barbuda on their upcoming itineraries. The Cruise lines were informed of a number of incentives that are particular attractive to the smaller ships such as the “two for one” head-tax package for those ships who visit Barbuda the day after visiting Antigua. In such instances a second call to Barbuda would not attract any additional head tax.

During the event the Antigua and Barbuda team participated in a series of media interviews included Cruise Insight Magazine and Seatrade Cruise review, which will be featured in the next issue of the magazines for the largest industry event Cruise Shipping Miami. This gave the destination an opportunity to update cruise stakeholders on the latest activities, developments and prospects for cruise tourism in Antigua and Barbuda going forward.

Delegates at the convention had a chance to see firsthand the developments at the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal with opportunities to tour the facilities and participate in ship visits throughout the event. Marseille which sits at the heart of Mediterranean cruise industry has led the region to become the second most popular cruise destination after the Caribbean.

Seatrade Med 2012 attracted over 130 exhibitors and some 3,000 visitors annually. The event presented Antigua and Barbuda with a not to be missed opportunities to meet its many valued cruise clients, to network with its regional partners and to conduct valuable business negotiations.
