INDEPENDENCE MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA FOR ELDERLY
Tuesday 16th October 2012
More than four hundred (400) elderly citizens in Antigua & Barbuda, who are registered under the Ministry of Social Transformation Residential Assistance and Care Programme for the Elderly and Eligible (GRACE), will be part of an illustrious musical extravaganza, later this month, as plans gets underway to commemorate the annual Independence Program.

Chief Welfare Aide, Carlstien Quinland said the involvement of the elderly in the Independence celebration dates back to around 1991.

On October 24th, 2012, the Multi-Purpose Cultural Centre from 10 will be revived with historical perspectives, folklores, culture, dance and musical experience from various artistes. “Elderly will be attired in National dress, as a way bringing back memories of the yester–year, with refreshingly appropriate, high quality relaxing entertainment,” Quinland said.

Quinland said, the activity, spearheaded by the Ministry of Social Transformation and coincides with the National Independence Celebration, is a calendar event which seeks to strengthen intragenerational and the historical gaps.

Quinland explained that the elderly will benefit significantly from the musical activity being organized for them; among them include “increased endurance, stronger muscles and improved balance and flexibility. Music also encourages seniors to get moving and enjoy themselves while being physically active.”

Additionally, she said it is also important in the cognitive and social aspects of the body.

Already slated on the entertainment line–up are; The Sunny Dale Dancers, St. Peters Primary, Lyrics Man, King Zachari, The National Dance Theatre, St. Joseph Academy –Glee Club, La Schatador, Senior Citizens Council, The Marching Band and Calypso Joe
