MEDIA LAUNCH OF ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK
Thursday 8th April 2010

Antigua Sailing Week 2010 was officially presented to the media at a ceremony that took place at the Copper and Lumber Store Hotel in Nelson’s Dockyard on Thursday afternoon. Present as well as the media were many of the event's sponsors, business partners and organizers.  Addressing the audience the Minister of Tourism the Honorable John Maginley highlighted that Antigua Sailing Week is a national event and emphasized the importance of ensuring that when our visitors come and experience this year's event that they experience the culture, people and fun that makes Antigua unique. Minister of Culture Eleston Adams expressed his satisfaction with the fact that the cultural aspects were being incorporated so extensively into the event and most  especially with the opportunity to launch Antigua Carnival 2010 during Sailing Week. Visitors to the event we get the opportunity to experience dance groups, calypsonians and steel pan orchestras along with the best of Antiguan bands, that will allow them to walk away excited and inspired about Antigua with a desire to return not just for future Sailing Week events, but throughout the year.

Regatta Chairman Neil Forrester, along with Paddy Prendergast, organizer of the land side events expressed their thanks for all of the support given from both the Ministries of Tourism and Culture and explained the significance of the involvement of a wider group in this year’s planning of Sailing Week. Forrester stated ‘ This year we recognized the importance of further developing the land side events to ensure that we can deliver a memorable and exciting week of parties for not just the sailors but for fellow Antiguans and residents. We therefore established a landside committee headed up by Paddy Prendergast and involving the Commissioner of National Parks Anne-Marie Martin, Valerie Hodge of Shirley Heights Lookout, Jerry Daniels (from the Ministry of Tourism), Tracy Guerrero of Indigo Event Services and Alison Sly-Adams of Antiguanice.com. Together the team, along with other key business people and stakeholders, has established a network of partners who are working together to deliver an event showcasing the best we have to offer in Antigua and Barbuda.

Forrester and Prendergast made it very clear that it has been the involvement of new partners into the event that has allowed the production on such a grand scale to take place. Prendergast stated that he has been humbled by the level of commitment and enthusiasm being showed by businesses across the nation who have a desire to help create a fantastic week of entertainment and excitement both on and off the water.

Forrester thanked the long time sponsors Lime, Yachting World, Virgin, Liat, English Harbour Rum and Jolly Harbour (C.D.A.L.) which he cited as being the foundation upon which Sailing Week has been able to grow over the years. New sponsors welcomed to this year’s event are Chivas Regal Whiskey distributed by Premier Beverages, Ocean Potion Skincare, the official skin care range of Antigua Sailing Week, Café Britt, official beer sponsor Carib distributed by A.S. Brydens (Antigua) Ltd and last but not least, new Diamond Sponsor Leinfelder Watches of Munich who have designed and handmade a beautiful watch as a prize for the regatta.  A further 30 partners have come on board and together with sponsors, volunteers and organizers form the huge cast that is Antigua Sailing Week 2010.
