SCALLY WAG AND BLUE RAPID VICTORIOUS
Monday 28th May 2012

The 46th Antigua and Barbuda Sport Fishing Tournament proved to be as much fun and as highly competitive as previous years.

Throughout the two days literally thousands of people passed through Nelson's Dockyard to enjoy the superb variety of food and bars on offer as well as check out the weigh ins each day.

Lines were finally out at 4.00pm yesterday and all fish bought to the scale weighed in to allow the awards ceremony to go ahead as planned at 8pm. And what a great result for the two champion boats Scally Wag in the Sporting Division and Blue Rapid in the Marlin Division.

For Scally Wag and Captain Michael Hall they caught a total of 282 1/2 lbs to walk away with champion boat, beating runner up Goldfin skippered by Nico Psihoyos, by 37 3/4 lbs. That said Goldfin did win Champion Boat 25ft and under with an excellent catch of 244  3/4 lbs.

The Scally Wag crew also scored high on the individual prizes. First up ten year old Sebastian Gobinet cleaned up by winning second largest kingfish, largest wahoo (with a huge 55 1/4 lb fish) and with the same fish, biggest fish caught by a youth. He walked off with a total of EC$1500, three trophies and a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses distributed exclusively by Shades Designer Eyewear.

Also on Scally Wag, Robert Hall won second largest wahoo and Kimberley Hall won largest fish caught by a female with a 35 3/4 lb wahoo. And another great performance by a woman came from Sixpence and angler Dana Siva, a tournament regular, who caught a 34 3/4 lb kingfish and won biggest kingfish.

Probably the most exciting moment at the scale, was when angler Vincent Herpe from Guadeloupian boat Apollon bought his 176 3/4 lb tuna to the scale, setting a new record for largest tuna caught in the tournament and also netting the largest fish caught by a male.

In the marlin division Champion boat winners Blue Rapid had two tag and releases earning 600 points and a fantastic EC$10,000 cheque plus a trophy and a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. Hard working angler Justin Barreto aged 15 also earned most tag and releases for his efforts as well as champion youth, earning EC$50 in prize money, two trophies and a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses.

Champion Female went to Tameka Wharton with one tag and release and champion make to Giliano Lawrence on Xtreme with one tag and release.

The runner up was the boat Apollon from Guadeloupe with skipper Karl Petrelluzzi with one blue and one white release, and second runner up Missa Ferdie and captain Pelo Bailey with one blue release.

The crews and visitors to the event unanimously declared the event a roaring success yet again with the standard of food and bars again improving to firmly keep its place as the favourite event in Antigua for many. From the pulled pork sandwich on the Food and Drink Grab n Go stall, to the conch fritters at Global Catering, the cold delicious rosé wine from Premier Beverages to the cold and very welcome Carib in the beer garden, this was an event to remember and with 2267 ½ lbs of fish bought to the scale, the fish lovers who queued to take fresh fish home were very happy.

Participant Margaret Habib of Aquasports says ' What this event brings is a union, a kinship of everyone regardless of colour, creed, race and age-the old and the young joining in festive harmony. It's always great to see families together. Fathers holding their babies, mothers pushing the prams, grandparents looking after the little ones, and friends coming together and enjoying good, clean fun. What I enjoy the most is seeing the children running and playing freely, with very little adult intervention. Aren't we lucky here in Antigua that our children can still roam free without fear?'

These thoughts have been echoed each year and none so much as in 2012. As we move into the last day of the tournament for the 2nd Annual Antigua and Barbuda Marlin Classic three boats are out on the water battling for the big one.
