JHYC SATURDAY SAILING UPDATE
Tuesday 7th July 2009

This weekend again saw 7 boats at the start but sadly only 4 at the finish line! We were sailing the strong wind Course "C" for the first time.
A couple of boats found it tough going and sailed home after the first rounding of Pelican mark. Then there were 5! Poor old Tony on “Augustine”, having finally found his copy of the Courses last week, still managed to go "blonde" at Reeds and sailed home to the finish missing out 2 marks! Out on the course Miramar pressed on into Five Islands and at one point noted 32 knots apparent!! We were not going that fast so winds were consistently in the high 20's.

All credit to the guys who worked out our course options as all 3 have been sailed now and the duration of each appears to spot on. The target was roughly 2 hours a circuit and they are not far off!

Class SPH saw Miramar take the Rum Ration by just over 6 minutes and Class CSA yet again saw a battle between “Biwi Magic” and “Blue Peter”. These 2 were neck and neck most of the way but “Blue Peter” lost sight of the Irish Mark on the final circuit and let “Biwi” in for another very close finish and win for Geoff Pidduck. See attached pic.

Tommy Patterson on “Slingshot” was one of those to pull out at Pelican mark while in the lead and made a really serious attempt at "using" the shortened course rule!! Even with the somewhat tongue in cheek backing of our International Judge, Geoff Pidduck, the Race Committee were having none of it. To say one's VHF had been drowned by extreme heeling doesn't quite cut it!!! There are other ways to communicate!
At the end of the day, “Miramar” won the SPH Rum Ration and “Biwi Magic” took the CSA prize.

Results are up on the Foredeck board and the Summer Series standings are on the website here http://www.jhycantigua.com/s_series09.html

Yet another great afternoon out the water was followed by The Foredeck Pig Roast that contributed $400 to the YDP funds (thanks Angie and all bake contributors). The evening ended with another fun Saturday for JHYC.

The weekends Dinghy Sailing attracted 10 youngsters for training in the morning at the YDP session. We still have yet to attract fun sailors for the afternoon session and may have to review this aspect of the weekend if nobody is interested.

Unfortunately, the 3 children and 1 adult booked in for the Sunday morning training session were discouraged by the rain, winds and clouds, so this session was cancelled. Brian & Pippa still took “Miramar” out to anchor off North Beach in the hope the weather would behave and we could get some Laser Racing going in the afternoon. Hope springs eternal and we ended up with 4 sailors, Tony Sayer, Chris Chitty, Dave Buller and Geoff Muston competing over 3 races and having a generally good time! In true Tony Sayer style he managed to fall off his boat once again but impressed with his very slick (well it was slick for someone with as much grey hair as he’s got!) capsize recovery drill.

The beach BBQ, sausages, beer and wine were yet again enjoyed by all and despite the grey clouds and, unbelievably slack breeze, the 9 people who turned up had a great afternoon that looks set to become a regular social gathering for the Club. Our location at North Beach with its palm tree shade and shallow warm water is the perfect setting for an afternoon of liming! All are welcome – join us next Sunday from 12:30 for dinghy rigging and racing.
