OUTSTANDING BARITONE, OMAR KAMATA
Monday 26th March 2018

A baritone with a versatile voice and great interpretational skills; because of these qualities Omar works in different repertoires and is often hired for character roles, ranging from the comic repertoire to the dramatic.

Born in Treviso, he began to study the accordion at the age of five, an instrument he still plays in concerts and sometimes uses in his own lyrical productions.

Finalist and winner of various international competitions, among which the Toti Dal Monte (2004) and the Alfano Lyric Competition (2005 - concert broadcast on the national television network RAI UNO), Omar made his official debut in 2004 as Figaro in "Il Barbiere Di Siviglia" by Rossini.

Since then he has been in various operatic productions taking leading roles in "La Bohème", "Rigoletto", "Cavalleria Rusticana", "La Traviata", "Carmen", "Madama Butterfly", "Turandot", "Don Giovanni", "Il Barbiere di Siviglia", "Elisir d’amore", "Così fan tutte", "L’Italiana in Algeri", "La Cenerentola", "Don Pasquale", "Il Trovatore", "Gianni Schicchi", "Tabarro" and more.

In 2011 he was chosen by the famous baritone Renato Bruson to debute the role of Falstaff in the opera of the same name by Verdi. That year he performed Sharpless in "Madama Butterfly" at the Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg with public success and critical acclaim.

Significantly, 2015 saw Omar in Greece taking the role of the Italian painter Tiziano in a world premiere of "El Greco" with composer George Hatzinasios at the Theatre of Piraeus in Athens. A year later he was appearing at the Greek National Opera and in Seoul's Art Center in Korea, performing "Rigoletto" by Verdi followed by roles as Scarpia and Escamillo at the prestigious Epidaurus Festival, once again in Athens.

2017 brought Omar to Teatro Bonci as Alfio in "Cavalleria Rusticana" by Mascagni and an appearance in Verona for a production of Rossini's "Il Viaggio a Reims" at the Teatro Filarmonico. In Poland he performed the open air production of "La Boheme" as Marcello, under the innovative direction of Gianmaria Aliverta. Omar also took part in the Festival in Verona with renowned conductors and directors such as Julian Kovatchev and Franco Zeffirelli.

The Sailing Academy is an open air venue and has a large capacity. For those, particularly with family, wanting a more local and exciting atmosphere on more casual lines this would be great for them. The AOS do not think that this performance is suitable for young children, but at the same time want to encourage teenagers and young adults, especially with a musical interest, to come and experience something new. To this end, The Society would like to offer a special price of US$15/EC$40 at the gate for all between the ages of 10 and 18.

The Antigua Opera Society is a newly registered charity offering Opera Performances on island and all profits will go to support musical and vocal education of children in Antigua and next year’s intended production. Plans for 2019 include, for the first time ever, a full Opera in March/April and discussions for this are already in motion. Their Excellencies Sir Rodney and Lady Williams are the Society’s Ambassadors and are firmly and actively supporting the planning stage for this year’s performances.
