SLB MEDICAL CENTRE NEW GUIDELINES
Monday 23rd August 2021

To ensure excellent patient care as well as family and visitor safety, the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) health teams are working around the clock to stay on top of the evolving COVID-19 situation. We are monitoring the rise in COVID-19 cases very closely and adjusting our visitation guidelines as needed. Here's the latest:

▪️Outpatient Clinics
Service remains uninterrupted. This includes: Rehab, Oncology, and Dialysis

▪️Lab, Radiology & Pharmacy
Service remains uninterrupted.
Exceptions for End of Life Care, Inpatient, Emergency Department, Oncology Clinic (Necessary Visitation)

▪️End of Life Care
Families of patients receiving end-of-life care may contact our Nursing Office        (484-2712) to find out how you can visit and how you can visit them safely.

INPATIENT STAY
▪️Visits by anyone who is legally authorized to make decisions for the patient, or person in the role of a surrogate decision-maker as recognized by the care team for patients who lack decisional capacity.
▪️Support people for patients with cognitive impairment or other neurological injury (such as stroke) or for patients who have developed hospital delirium or dementia, where the consistent presence of the visitor is necessary to reduce the risk of medical or clinical harm
▪️Support people for patients who require assistance because of developmental disabilities, physical disabilities or limitations, or cognitive impairment.

EMERGENCY CARE
▪️Minors are allowed one visitor. One parent/guardian of a patient under the age of 18 will be allowed back into the care area with their child.
▪️ALL visits outside of the restricted times must be approved in advance.

GUIDELINES for VISITORS
▪️Approved visitors must follow these visitation guidelines:
▪️You must wear your mask properly and stay six feet from others at all times.
▪️No in/out—once you are settled into the patient room, you must stay there for the duration of your visit.
▪️Any visitor who exhibits signs and symptoms of illness will not be granted entrance.
▪️We reserve the right to ask permitted visitors to leave at any time. Disruptive individuals will be asked to leave the hospital immediately.

CONNECTING with LOVED ONES
▪️Staying connected outside of visiting hours, or when you are unable to visit:
▪️If your hospitalized family member is able to communicate on their own, we ask that you please contact them directly.
▪️If you would like to speak with the care team, we ask that families of hospitalized patients please designate only ONE family member to call the hospital. This helps limit the number of phone calls and keeps our focus on providing direct patient care.
▪️The designated point of contact will receive an update from a member of the care team at least once a day or more frequently if the patient's condition or treatment changes significantly. Some exceptions may apply, as determined by the health care team.
▪️We ask that the designated family member kindly refrain from calling during shift change (6:30 am – 7:30am, 2:30pm – 3:30pm and 10:30pm – 11:30pm), as this is when care teams are sharing important patient information with the incoming shift.

HOSPITAL ACCESS
▪️ALL patients and visitors (with the exception of Emergency Dept. patients and visitors) must use the hospital’s Main Entrance on the second floor
▪️Persons who wish to purchase food only must access the Cafeteria using the rear Cafeteria entrances (Southern Courtyard) - and should not proceed any further into the hospital.
▪️We are also closed to volunteers.
▪️All tours and in-person events are cancelled until further notice.

Thank you for your patience, support and flexibility as we work through these changes. Our policies are guided by the safety of our healthcare workers and the safety of our community as this pandemic evolves. We revisit this policy on an ongoing basis based on guidance from health authorities, COVID-19 patient census, infection thresholds in the community at large, and the advice of our infectious disease specialists.
