SIXTY PRIZES UP FOR GRABS IN AUA TINMAN ROHR TRIATHLON
Monday 2nd September 2013

The AUA Tinman Rohr Triathlon organisers have announced a prize package that will mean up to sixty persons walking home with cash and other prizes from the 2nd annual event on Sunday September 22nd.

The big winners will again come from the main event of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run.

The top five teams in each of the three categories of; male team, female team and mixed team will walk home with cash and other consolation prizes. Each team will include a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner.

The first teams will take home EC$600 and that goes for the first male team, first female team and the first mixed team,” said Andre Simon, one of the event founders.

“It then goes $450 and $300 for the second and third teams and so on right down to the fourth and fifth teams with some consolation prizes we hope to throw in as well.”

It means up to 45 team members will walk home with prizes on the day, while there will also be prizes up for grabs for the fastest swimmer, fastest cyclist and fastest runner. Each will take home $200.

“Triathlon is about the individual challenge but the Tinman is also about bringing together athletes from all three disciplines. We have things like the pasta party and it’s a bit like a sporting festival in that sense.

“For the team guys it’s a chance to compete but have fun without the same pressure of their main races”
Prizes for the individual top five males and females are $500, $400, $300, $200 and $100 respectively.

“We’ve got top guys racing like the 12-times Guadeloupe national champion so any Antiguan who finishes everything but falls outside of that top five will also be recognized and rewarded,” said Simon, who placed first Antiguan and second overall in the 2012 edition in 5 hours, 15 minutes, 13 seconds.

Timothy Thomas, Noel Roberts and Alisha David are among first timers from Antigua & Barbuda expected to tackle the entire swim, bike, run event solo alongside veterans like Wayne “Ironman” Henry.

Alisha David, Timothy Thomas and Noel Roberts are among first timers from Antigua and Barbuda expected to tackle what is considered the toughest endurance challenged held on the island.

Early registration has been extended until Friday September 6th and can be done at the National Olympic Office on the corner of Redcliffe and Market Streets or online at www.antiguatinmantriathlon.com.

The AUA Tinman Rohr Triathlon will also this year include a 5k walk/run and a mini triathlon which involves a 400m swim, 10k bike and 2k run and can be done by teams or individuals.

“There’s a chance for everyone to get involved. We have some of our sponsors and other businesses teaming up to do the mini triathlon while a lot of people have been signing up for the 5k,” said Simon.

The AUA Tinman Rohr is dedicated to the late AUA student and triathlete Jonathan Rohr who died suddenly of Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) – a leading cause of sudden death in young athletes.

The American University of Antigua (AUA) is the title sponsor for the AUA Tinman Rohr Triathlon.

Gold sponsors include; Blue Waters Hotel, Horizons Supplies Limited, Oasis Water, Big Banana Ltd, Observer Media Group and LIME. Silver sponsors include; Grant Thornton Ltd, Jolly Beach Resort & Spa, Subway, Cedars Pottery and 365Antigua.com. The event is also backed by the Ministry of Tourism, Antigua & Barbuda Triathlon Association and the Antigua & Barbuda Olympic Association.
