Antigua/Barbuda Under 16 Girls’ Volleyballers have succeeded in winning the Finals of the Eastern Caribbean Junior Volleyball Tournament defeating host country, St. Martin at the Omnisalle Sports Complex, Marigot, on Saturday night, June 25.
Besides Antigua/Barbuda, competing in the Tournament are Bermuda, French St. Martin and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
In the preliminaries, Antigua/Barbuda defeated St. Vincent & the Grenadies, 3 sets to 1.
The team is under Coach Rosely Lewis, Head Referee, Alister Benjamin and Chaperone, Shauna Isaac.
The Wings Youth Football contingent of 20 players and 4 officials will be participating in friendly competition hosted by the Wayne George Football Academy in Dominica.
The group comprising 3 girls and 17 boys, ages 11yrs to 15 yrs, will leave Antigua on Tuesday, June 28, and engage in football and cultural activities put on by their host.
The Wings Youth Football sector has been for the past two years trying to raise the funds to participate in the AC Milan Cup Youth Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, but besides inadequate finance raised, a num-ber of players still needed to acquire US visas to travel.
Last summer, the Wings Youth Footballers travelled to the British Virgin Islands and has been participating in the ABFA Youth Football program.
The WYF team will, once again, be looking forward to participate in the Warriors Cup, August 4—24, 2011, organized by the Young Warriors Football Club.
The team traveling to Dominica comprises of: Dave George, Greg Coates, Ghere Coates, Melvin James, Gary Collins, Deron McIntosh, Jerome Gilead, Ajahrie Hosier, Couli Graymam, Jaleel Joseph, Jalique Hazlewood, Gerald Williams, Somory Farrel, Javid Harvey, Ngozie Harvey, Tiara Ambrose, Lena Ibrahim, Tane Codrington.
Meanwhile, the Antigua/Barbuda Vol-leyball Association and the Antigua/Barbuda Na-tional Olym-pic Associa-tion will be hosting a Day of Volleyball Exhibition on Sunday, June 26, starting at 6:30 P.M.
All Volleyballers are encouraged to come out in full support and show their Olympic Solidarity.
