Coming out of a fairly successful 2010 Track & Field season, Antiguan athletes are presently looking forward to building on their accomplishments.
However, besides winning medals, many of the athletes on the verge of graduation are expecting to impress coaches and scouts for possible recruitment to Colleges and Universities in the USA.
One such Coach looking to rebuild the athletic program at Fairleigh Dickenson University in New Jersey is Pete Charles.
Pete Charles is the son of CPTSA Secretary, Mrs. Lynette Charles and Pastor Ivor Charles. Pete was a former outstanding athlete of the Wings Track & Field team in the sprints and long jump.
Charles is now an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickenson and was recently in Antigua, over the Christmas Holidays. The young coach will continue to monitor the progress of some of Antigua’s top athletes with the intention of recruiting.
Meanwhile, Wings athletes , participating for their respective schools are expected to show much improvement over last year when the Interschool Track & Field comes up in March. Princess Margaret dominated both male & female divisions in 2010, pinching St. Joseph’s Academy and Christ the King High School into Second Place. However, these two schools are expected to rebound, both schools comprising some of the Wings top athletes.
The Interschool Track & Field Championship has been one of the major meets for selection to the Annual Carifta Games. However, a gray cloud is at the moment hanging over the staging of the Games. St. Kitts which was originally slated to host the meet have indicated that they are unable to.
It is now left up to the Grenada Government which has said that its stadium will be ready to host the 40 year old games.
Local and regional athletes are also looking forward to the 3rd Annual Sir Reginald Samuel Track & Field Classic, April 30 & May 1, 2011, YASCO, Antigua.
