CARNIVAL ROUND-UP: ALL SWEET THINGS MUST COME TO AN END Thursday 8th August 2013
Carnival 2013 has come and gone, and while individuals will be staging their after parties, we can’t wait to do it all over again for Antigua Carnival 2014! Here’s a flashback at some highlights of this year’s festivities:
Newcomer Ezzy Rattigan froze The Winter Man at this year’s carnival competition in the hot soca arena, taking the Golden Cup and EC$ 25,000 prize in the Jumpy version while Tian Winter held on to his Groovy soca title with another Carnival hit, Roaming, copping another EC$ 20,000 prize with the title. Other hopeful contenders including Set On’s Smile and Claudette “CP” Peters’ Belong to a Flag followed in second and third place earning EC$15,000 and EC$10,000, respectively, in the Groovy section. After Rattigan took the Jumpy title, Winter also grabbed the second place trophy and another EC$ 20,000 prize with Aint Got Time for That ahead of Hard Knaxx’s Jam Jam who earned $15,000 for his jamming.
On the calypso scene, Edimelo disturbed the three-time sleeping Calypso King De Bear with his Light of Hope and Ghetto Boys, capturing the senior crown and completely dethroning De Bear. In second place was King Singing Sudden with Raw Confusion and Looking for the King followed by Blade who helped to Capture De Bear while telling the audience “The World is Watching us”. Whilst in the Junior Calypso competition, best artist and stage performer Baby Eve shined in the junior category and teen K-Kay topped the other category.
In steel pan, LIME Hell's Gate Steel Orchestra is the 2013 Panorama Champion for the third consecutive time securing its 17th Panorama championship.
New Jumpy Soca King Rattigan also walked away with the road march title due to top 174 plays on J’Ouvert Morning and Carnival Tuesday parade while LIME Dynamics takes royal Band of the Year title for its portrayal of All That Jazz. Among large bands, the Revellers Mas Club’s A Visit to the Mother Land took home the top honours, while Ali and Associates was the top-ranked medium band for its Dazzling portrayal. Small band went to Just Friends Tribal Mas while The Ladies of Style won the award in the Marching Band category, among other winners.
Ms. Caribbean Premium Motors, Raynel Caroll was crowned the new carnival queen after beating nine other contestants. First runner-up went to Tenice Grigg while Arlette Chastanet copped second runner-up. Sweet Benna Soca, Carroll also added the Best Evening Gown award and first runner-up at the Jaycees Caribbean Queen Pageant to her collection of titles.
In youth pageantry, Teen Splash competition continues to please with high schoolers outstanding talent and poise. The coveted Teen Splash title went to Antigua Girls High School’s Lehana Simon this year. Simon not only took the title but bagged a few other prizes including the interview segment, best female performer, most congenial and the Prime Minister’s Leadership Award. The first runner-up position went to Ischikelle Corbin of the Princess Margaret School (PMS) whom the judges also awarded the Personality and Aspiration segment title. Best male performer Andre Cordice, also of PMS, secured the second runner-up spot and copped the Talent segment with his medley of tunes played on the steel pan, and was deemed most helpful by the judges.
