ENVIRONMENT DIVISION ENCOURAGES STUDENT TO PRACTICE ADOPTIVE MANAGEMENT
Thursday 1st September 2011

With the opening of school year, just around the corner, the Environment Division is of the view that students who participated in its Eco-Zone Summer Camp are now better equipped to practice adoptive sustainable environment management.

Environment Education Officer Arica Hill said, children representing the age group 5 to 11 years –old, participated in the various activities with climaxed on July 29th.

The four weeks of camp activities, were held at the Princess Margaret Secondary School.
She described the camp as successful, noting that; more than one –hundred students participated in the closing ceremony.

“The children at the camp were bursting with constant activity and excitement.  They were involved in arts and craft, cookery, drama and singing, agricultural related activities and bird identification and sighting,” said Hill, adding that as a reminder to protect and preserve the ecosystem, as well as enhancing our food security, each child was encouraged to cultivate from a range of vegetable commodities, specifics crops as part of camp activity.
The plants were, later distributed among them.

Field trips were also organised to the farm of Mr. Alvin Christian, who demonstrated good agricultural and environmental practices.

Hill said, it is the mandate of the Environment Division to, whilst executing sound environmental management, encourage private organisations to play a critical role in the sustainable practices to enhance its community based advocacy, at all levels.

As such, in 2011 for the first time several corporate sponsors have come onboard among them are American University of Antigua (AUA), D&Y Sparkling Detergents and Carlton Douglas Trucking.

The Environment Division is a department in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Housing & the Environment.
