RECAP OF THE YOUTH MEDIA WORKSHOP Tuesday 24th April 2012
The Youth Media Workshop ended with a bang as the participants proudly showcased the fruits of their labour. The initiative spearheaded by the Department of Youth Affairs and supported by UNICEF, was held at the Department of Youth Affairs headquarters. The week long workshop, which ran from 16th – 20th of April, involved 25 young persons, who participated in workshops on Videography and productions, photography, advocacy and public speaking. The Workshops were facilitated by Howard and Mitzi Allen of HAMA productions, famed local photographer Mali Olatunji, and Director of Youth Affairs Cleon Athill.
In the closing exercises on Friday afternoon participants displayed the skills. Participants in the public speaking and advocacy workshop presented their “Letter to the Prime Minister”, and Dear editor letters. From the concerns raised in these letters it was apparent that young people not only think about social and political issues of the country, but they have strong opinions and that they can think creatively about solutions.
The highlight of the day, however, was the presentation of two short movies that were written, edited, produced, and shot by the participants. These two movies will soon be released on social media and other platforms.
The Youth Media Initiative is part of a broader initiative of the Department of Youth Affairs to empower and engage young people, and to instruct them in the skills necessary to contribute to social dialogue.
