ST. JOHN'S HARBOUR TO BE DREDGED IN 2013

Minister responsible for Public Works the Hon. Trevor Walker said the St John’s Harbour will be dredged this year and that $20.3 million dollars has been budgeted to undertake the work.

“Following concerns raised about the present depth of the seabed by captains of various cruise ships in Antigua, a hydrographic survey was done and it was established and determined that the levels of the turning basin and part of the harbour was insufficient for the cruise ships,” Minister Walker told the Lower House of Parliament on Monday.

MP Walker said the work has to be done in order for the country to stay competitive in the cruise tourism sector.

The Public Works Minister also denied what he referred to as rumours that a contractor has been handpicked for the project.

“We will not, have not, picked, handpicked or chosen any contractor to do this work. This matter went to the Tenders Board and I want to make that clear because there is a situation out there that we have handpicked persons, or a person or a company,” Walker said.
