The World’s Toughest Row features 38 teams, including Antiguan Pammie Tyson. Row for Cancer is in the lead, with over 2,000 miles rowed so far. Sadly, Row 4 ALS was forced to retire, but Martin’s spirit continues to inspire the remaining 37 teams.
In local news, Rocco Falcone, an Antiguan and Barbudan sailor, received the Governor General’s Faithful and Meritorious Service Cross for sailing excellence. Meanwhile, the 2024 Boxing Day Barrel Race saw Josh Bailey, Bob Green, and S/Y Gypsy win Class B, while Danish Blue triumphed in Class A.
Looking ahead, the 27th edition of the Jolly Harbour Yacht Club Valentine’s Regatta is scheduled for February 15-16, 2025. The Globe 5.80 Transat Challenge starts on January 11, with 12 boats racing 3,000 miles from Marina Rubicón to the National Sailing Academy. The 11th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race will begin on January 12 from Lanzarote, heading to Grenada and Antigua. The Atlantic Dash, including A & B’s Waves of Awareness, is rowing 3,200 nautical miles from Lanzarote to Jolly Harbour Marina.
Clarence E. Pilgrim is the new Commodore of the Antigua Yacht Club, promising vibrant growth and leadership.
Other upcoming events include the RORC Nelson’s Cup Series on February 18-19 and the 50NM Antigua 360º Race on February 21. There’s also the Sailors 300 Years Ago regatta in April, celebrating the 300th anniversary, and registration is open for the 32nd International Optimist Regatta in June 2025 at the St. Thomas Yacht Club.
