Another young Antiguan sailor has made world sailing. Tristan Louwrens, of Willoughby Bay, was aboard Yacht Warrior Won, a PAC 52, which took part in the RORC Lanzarote to Grenada race, winning the coveted RORC Trans-Atlantic Championship Trophy. Yet another trophy for Antigua! Tristan trained at the Antigua Yacht Club, in the youth sailing programme. An experienced international competitor, he was the youngest sailor in the Antigua and Barbuda National Star Sailor’s League team, which surprised experienced teams by reaching the quarter finals in the SSL Gold cup in 2023.
He was not the only young Antiguan in the race, Fellow youth sailing programme participant Giles de Jager raced aboard Leopard 3, a Farr 100, the first monohull to finish the course, completing it in 10 days, 17 hours and 23 minutes, winning the RORC IMA Trans-Atlantic Trophy.
The RORC Caribbean 600 prepares to race in February, sailing 600 miles around the caribbean islands, setting off and returning to Antigua. Can the two boats repeat their victory?
