TIGER TYSON BIDS FOR OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION Friday 11th August 2023
Antigua and Barbuda’s Kite-boarder Tiger Tyson will be competing at the 2023 World Sailing Championships in the Netherlands in August. This will mark the start of his bid to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. Eight athletes will qualify from these championships, though there will be a further opportunity at the Pan American Games in Chile in October. If his bid this year is unsuccessful, “there is a last chance regatta next year in France where the remaining five countries can qualify from around the world, but for now we are aiming at being in the top eight countries at this World Championships,” he said. Large countries like the UK receive thousands of dollars in sponsorship, enabling them to buy the best equipment. As an athlete in a small country, Tiger, who beat international keel boats in the Round-Antigua race earlier this year, is still seeking corporate sponsorship to enable him to represent Antigua on the world stage.
