A TRIBUTE TO LISA NICHOLSON
Monday 27th March 2023

The National Parks Authority joins with members of the community in mourning the loss of an influential figure and major contributor to the development of Antigua and Barbuda’s thriving yachting sector.

Lisa Nicholson played an instrumental role along with her late husband Desmond and the Nicholson family, in the development of the Nelson’s Dockyard as the preeminent hub for yachting in the Caribbean.

It is hard to imagine what English Harbour would be like today without the contribution of the Nicholsons.

The ensuing love affair that followed the arrival of the Nicholson family to Antigua well over fifty years ago continued to be nurtured by Mrs. Nicholson until her sad passing and is certain to remain an enduring legacy for years to come.

Mrs. Nicholson will be remembered for the instrumental role that she played in the establishment of the Admiral’s Inn Hotel, which is still very much in operation today and stands out as one of the best examples of historic restoration in the Caribbean.

She is also a devoted member of the Baxter Memorial Methodist Church and was always an enthusiastic participant in the activities of the church’s community. She made it her duty to get involved in almost every aspect of community life, whether it be a beach clean-up or a charitable event.

“I must express my sympathies and that of the National Park to the family of Mrs. Nicholson. She has made a remarkable contribution to our community and for this, we will always cherish her memory. Even in her twilight years her passion and love for English Harbour never waned as she continued to show a keen interest in the activities of the Park and the wider community,” noted Parks Commissioner Mrs. Ann Marie Martin.

Earlier last year the National Parks Authority, as part of its celebration of the 60th anniversary of the restoration of the Nelson’s Dockyard, named her a Community Anchor for her work in gaining the respect and admiration of our communities.

“Her spirit of volunteerism is unshakeable, always willing to share her experiences, advice, or a helping hand. We are very happy to have her as one of our proud Community Anchors,” read the citation she received.

On behalf of the National Parks Authority, heartfelt sympathies go out to her family and friends and all those who mourn her loss.
