SHANEL DALEY TAKES EIGHT, FEELS GREAT!
Wednesday 10th August 2011

Bridgetown, Barbados – Jamaica allrounder Shanel Daley is feeling great after her amazing eight-wicket haul against Grenada in the second round of the WICB Women’s League on Tuesday.

The left-arm spinner set a new regional women’s record when she took eight wickets for just seven runs as Grenada were bowled out for 47 at the Pine Basin. She sent down three wides so only four runs came from the bat. Jamaica replied with 49-1 to win by nine wickets.

“It feels great ... really good to come out and do so well for Jamaica and contribute to the team’s victory. This goes to show that the hard work I have been doing is paying off in a big way,” the 22-year-old said after her career-best performance.

“The pitch was turning quite a bit and I was able to bowl with good control and get most of my wickets LBW and bowled down. I never imagined I would take such amazing bowling figures. We needed a win today after the defeat against Trinidad and Tobago on Monday and I’m happy to play my part. Overall I am delighted we won the match and we will look for more wins in this tournament.”

Daley is the daughter of allrounder Aaron Daley, who played for Jamaica in the 1980s. She has been a regular in the West Indies team for the over two years and has appeared in 23 One-Day Internationals and 20 T20 Internationals.

Two seasons ago she switched from left-arm medium-pace to left-arm spin on the advice of West Indies Coach Sherwin Campbell. She is also a top-order batter and on Monday made 60 to follow up her three wickets for 14 runs, but Jamaica lost to Trinidad and Tobago by three runs.

“My game is starting to take shape. I am enjoying the way things are going at the moment – getting runs and taking wickets. I just want to continue working hard and improving in all areas.”
