Barbadian student wins Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Mascot Competition

Bridgetown, Barbados - Twelve year old Harrison College student, Barbadian Daniel Lashley has been declared the winner of the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket ‘Design a Mascot Competition’.

Daniel’s entry “Chirpy the Cricket” copped the top position when weighed against 12 other national winners from across the Caribbean. Daniel won for himself a brand new laptop computer for his top placing in addition to the Nintendo DS he won for being the top entrant from his country.

Daniel also wins lifelong bragging rights of creating the design of the new Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket mascot.

Daniel’s “Chirpy the Cricket” got a resounding 152 from a maximum of 175 points when it was assessed by a panel of regional judges from the West Indies Cricket Board and Scotiabank.

Chirpy was found to be the best entry based on use of colour, creativity, originality, artistic skill, spirit and practicality of the design. The second and third place winners are Stello the Steel Pan from Ronaldo Stookram of Trinidad and Fire Ant by John Rayne of Antigua.

The competition attracted over 6000 entries from students across the region when it was launched on January 4.

Lashley’s victory heralds the official end of reign for Clarence the Crab who served as the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Mascot for the past 12 years.

Clarence had been the face of the programme both on the field during the Kiddy Cricket interval displays as well as in the classroom with the Clarence Goes To School manual.
