WINDIES CONFIDENT AHEAD OF BIG MATCH
Monday 6th June 2011

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad – West Indies will enter Saturday’s Digicel Pearls T20 International believing they have what it takes to topple India at the Queen’s Park Oval. First ball is 10 am (9 m Jamaica Time).

Windies skipper Darren Sammy said his team is well prepared and is ready for the big occasion. Sammy said the recent results against Pakistan had given his players the confidence and self-belief that they have what it takes to topple higher-ranked opponents. He was speaking on Friday at the official series launch in the Brian Lara Pavilion at the Queen’s Park Oval.

“That series against Pakistan has boosted our self-belief and we are confident of doing better in the series against India. We did some very good things against Pakistan and we got some results in our favour. We have been working quite hard as a team unit and we are focused and ready for this match and the entire series,” an upbeat Sammy said.

“We are all fully aware that this will be a tough series against India. They are a very good side, and they are the world champions. We need to show some improvement and we are planning and working towards that."

The 27-year-old all rounder added: “Players are aware of what’s at stake in this series. A win against the world champions can boost our rankings as well. Our wins against Pakistan were steps in the right direction, but we need to be more consistent with the results and our performance. I know that won’t come overnight, but we just need to keep working hard and believing in what we are doing as a group.”

Saturday’s match is sure to provide an opportunity for the young players on both teams to showcase their talents before a near capacity at the historic venue, which has the largest seating capacity in the Caribbean.

Sammy expects a lot from his players. The squad features all rounders Ashley Nurse and Chris Barnwell, along with batsman Danza Hyatt and left-arm seamer Krishmar Santokie – all new faces on the international stage.

“We have some players who are very keen to get this opportunity to represent the West Indies. I have been speaking to them and they are really eager to do well. They have been talking about this and this match is a chance to impress and do well for West Indies cricket. The selectors have showed a lot of faith in them and I’m sure they will want to make their mark. Every match in a West Indies shirt is a golden opportunity,” the Windies Number 88 noted.

Following the Digicel Pearls T20 International, Trinidad and Tobago will face the Sagicor High Performance Centre in a Twenty20 match. First ball in that game is 2 pm (1 pm Jamaica Time).
