DIGICEL GRASSROOTS PROGRAMME LAUNCHED IN ANTIGUA, ST LUCIA & NEVIS
Sunday 27th March 2011

The Digicel Grassroots Cricket Programme is being launched all across the Caribbean. Launches were held in Antigua, St Lucia and Nevis on Thursday and Friday.

In Antigua the launch was at the world famous Antigua Recreation Ground while in St Lucia the launch was at the Beausejour Cricket Grounds and in Nevis at the Elquemedo Willett Park.

At the simple but historic Antigua launch Minister of State the Honourable Winston Williams commended Digicel for their sponsorship of the programme.

“I commend Digicel for moving beyond the boundary of sponsoring West Indies Cricket to embracing the development of the sport which has significant historical meaning for us as a people,” Minister Williams lauded.

“The launch of this initiative in Antigua and Barbuda is indeed a timely one. It comes at a pivotal point when we are working hard on opening additional doors for our student athletes in the sporting discipline of cricket, with a greater focus at the community level. This WICB Digicel Programme which fits in with our cricket development model, can therefore only serve to strengthen our programme,” Minister Williams added.

President of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association, Gregory Shillingford commented: “This programme is very important in terms of teaching kids how to play cricket successfully so that when we participate at an elite level on the world stage we will be successful.”

“We will incorporate cricket skills, we will show how fitness is important, we will discuss your diet and nutrition with you and your parents,” added Shillingford.

Digicel Antigua & Barbuda, Marketing Executive, Karen Carr commented: “We are once again leading the way in supporting the development of cricket in the region. Our committed support of the game at this grassroots level is critical in ensuring that West Indies cricket re-emerges as a formidable force.”

At the Beausejour launch, Digicel Marketing Manager, St Lucia, Kerchelle Jn Charles remarked: “Digicel re-affirms its commitment to the sponsorship of West Indies cricket and fully endorses the Grassroots Programme now that we are taking cricket from the ground up in the Caribbean.”

Speaking directly to the youth cricketers Jn Charles added: “Like Darren Sammy, the captain of the West Indies team, you too can be stars if you work hard and follow the programme and the guidance of your coaches.”

Legendary West Indian batsman Sir Everton Weekes and Chairman of Selectors Clyde Butts attended the St Lucia launch.
