YOUNG ANTIGUAN SWIMMERS MAKE WAVES AT OLYMPIC GAMES Tuesday 30th July 2024
Fifteen-year-old Ellie Shaw, the 2023 Junior Sportswoman of the Year, competed in the 100m breaststroke, finishing third in her heat with a time of 1:14.78. Although she did not advance to the semifinals, Shaw’s Olympic debut is a remarkable achievement. Shaw, who trains with the Wadadli Aquatic Racers Swim Club under coach Edith Clashing, has already made a name for herself in Caribbean swimming.
Earlier this year, she won gold in the 100m breaststroke at the 2024 Carifta Championships and set national and junior area records in the 50m breaststroke at the 2024 World Championships.
Jadon Wuilliez, 22, also represented Antigua and Barbuda in the 100m breaststroke, finishing second in his heat with a time of 1:02.70, placing 26th overall. Despite not advancing to the semifinals, Wuilliez’s performance follows his recent success at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships, where he won gold in the 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 100m event.
Their performances at the Olympics have brought pride to Antigua and Barbuda and highlighted the potential of the nation's young athletes on the global stage!
